Journey to the top
The captain of the Black Stars and son of Ghanaian football legend Abedi Pele, Jordan Ayew was born in Marseille and began his professional career with Olympique de Marseille in 2009, scoring on his debut against Lorient — a match in which he played alongside his brother André. After a loan to Sochaux and a permanent move to Lorient, he signed for Aston Villa in 2015 (finishing as their top scorer in 2015/16), before transferring to Swansea City in 2017 (repeating the feat as top scorer). A loan to Crystal Palace in 2018/19 became permanent, and across five years at Palace he made over 200 appearances, winning the club''s Player of the Season award in 2019/20. He joined Leicester City in August 2024. Capped for Ghana since 2010, Ayew is the team''s second most-capped player with around 119 appearances — just one behind his brother André — and carries the weight of a football dynasty into his third World Cup as captain.
